I’m a true romantic at heart, and It fills me with so much joy to know that I get to work with so many amazing couples like you.
There’s this idea that you have to know exactly what to do in front of the camera for your engagement photos, but you really don’t. Some of my favorite playful engagement photo poses are less about posing and more about giving you something to do together. A little movement, a little silliness, and suddenly you’re not thinking about the camera anymore. You’re laughing at each other, leaning into the moment, and letting all those little pieces of your relationship come through. These are a few of my favorite playful prompts for doing exactly that.

There’s something about a twirl that immediately loosens everything up. It gives you movement without feeling forced, and no two couples ever do it quite the same way. Sometimes it’s soft and slow, sometimes it ends in laughter, and sometimes you get a little tangled up, which honestly makes it even better. I love using this one when we’re walking through the woods, standing by the water, or anywhere we have a little room to play.
And then there are kisses. Not the perfectly posed kind where everything has to be just right, but the pull-them-in, make-each-other-laugh kind. I might have you go in for a dramatic kiss, dip each other, or just get close and see what happens. Usually, the moments right before and after are just as good as the kiss itself.

Lifts are another favorite because they almost always bring out a genuine reaction. Maybe you scoop your person up and spin them around, maybe they wrap their arms around you, or maybe it all goes slightly sideways and you both start laughing. That’s kind of the point. I’m not looking for a perfectly executed lift, I’m looking for the way you two naturally react to each other while you’re doing it.
Tag has that same carefree feeling. I’ll have you chase each other around, try to catch one another, or just play for a minute. These kinds of engagement photo poses give you something fun to focus on, which means you have way less time to wonder what your hands are doing or whether you’re standing the “right” way.

“The escape” is exactly what it sounds like: grab your person and get out of here. I love the way this prompt creates that little just-us-two feeling, especially when you’re surrounded by trees, tucked into a garden, or somewhere that gives you space to wander. There’s usually a lot of laughter involved, but there can also be these quieter seconds where you naturally fall into each other.
Running works in a similar way, except I might have you run toward me, away from me, or hand in hand down a path. Your hair moves, your clothes move, and you’re usually laughing by the end of it. It gives your photos this really effortless energy while still leaving room for the softer moments in between.

This might be the one that sounds the silliest when I first say it: pretend you’re airplanes. Arms out, move around, lean into it, and just go with me for a second. There’s a reason I love prompts like this, though. The second you stop worrying about looking perfect and start laughing at what I’ve asked you to do, the camera becomes a whole lot less important.
That’s really what all of my favorite engagement photo poses have in common. They aren’t about putting you into a perfect position and asking you to hold it. They’re little starting points that give you room to move, play, flirt, laugh, and interact the way you naturally do. You don’t need to practice before your session or worry about being “good” at photos. The best part is simply letting yourselves have fun with it.

If you want your engagement photos to feel like more than standing in front of a camera and smiling, I’d love to create something that feels a little more like the two of you. We can run around, dance, be ridiculous for a minute, slow things down when it feels right, and leave plenty of room for all those little moments that happen naturally in between. You don’t have to show up knowing what to do, that part is on me. You just get to show up with your person, love on each other, and let the rest unfold. If that sounds like the kind of engagement session you’ve been dreaming about, I’d love to hear your story. Head to my contact page so we can chat about all the ideas you have!
