I’m a true romantic at heart, and It fills me with so much joy to know that I get to work with so many amazing couples like you.
There are so many little moments that make a wedding day feel like a wedding day, and I’ll admit, there are some wedding traditions I secretly hope never go away. But there are also a few I could probably live without. The thing is, none of these traditions are rules. Your wedding doesn’t need to follow a certain timeline or include something just because everyone before you did it. Keep the moments that feel meaningful, skip the ones that don’t, and if you want to make up something completely new along the way, even better.

First dances will always have my heart. Whether it’s the two of you having that first quiet moment together or a father-daughter dance that has everyone trying not to cry, there’s something about slowing everything down for a few minutes that feels really special. I also love first looks, between the bride and groom, with bridesmaids, or even with a parent. It’s less about creating a “moment” for the sake of photos and more about getting to share the excitement with the people who mean the most to you.
And then there are all those smaller wedding traditions that add so much personality to the day. Getting ready with your mom or bridesmaids, putting on your veil, cutting the cake together, or planning a fun exit at the end of the night. None of them have to look exactly like they’ve looked at a hundred other weddings. That’s actually what I love about them. The tradition might be familiar, but the people inside of it make it completely different every time.

Now for the slightly controversial part. Speeches, garter tosses, and bouquet tosses? I could take them or leave them. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have them if you genuinely love the idea. If your best friend has been planning their speech for years or you already know your bouquet toss is going to turn into complete chaos with your friends, absolutely do it. But if you’re only adding one of these moments because you feel like you’re supposed to, that’s where I’d reconsider.
Your reception doesn’t need to stop every few minutes to check another tradition off the list. Maybe you’d rather spend that time actually sitting down for dinner, talking with the people you invited, staying on the dance floor a little longer, or sneaking away together for a few quiet minutes. There’s no prize for fitting every wedding tradition into one day. Sometimes leaving a few things out gives you more room to actually enjoy everything that’s already happening.

This is really what it comes down to: your wedding should feel like yours. Keep every tradition if you love them. Change the ones that almost feel right. Skip anything that makes you wonder why you’re doing it in the first place. You can also create your own traditions, something silly, sentimental, completely unexpected, or so specific to the two of you that nobody else would think to do it.
Some of the best wedding-day moments happen when couples stop worrying about what a wedding is “supposed” to look like and start thinking about what they actually want to remember. Maybe that means a private last dance, getting ready together, sharing dessert before dinner, or ending the night somewhere completely unexpected. There’s so much freedom in realizing that you get to decide what matters.

If you’re planning a wedding and finding yourself questioning which traditions actually belong in your day, listen to that feeling. You don’t have to recreate someone else’s version of a wedding for yours to feel meaningful. Fill the day with the people you love, the moments you’re genuinely excited about, and whatever little traditions feel like the two of you. And if that means keeping some, skipping others, and completely making up the rest as you go, I’m all for it. I’d love to be there to document it exactly as it unfolds.
