5 things to consider when hiring your wedding photographer

I know that finding a wedding photographer is top on your list of things to do, and it’s so important to find the one that is right for you. It can be overwhelming, because there are SO MANY options out there and not every photographer is created equal. 

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and your wedding photographer plays a crucial role in capturing the moments you will cherish forever. I have been photographing weddings and elopements professionally since 2016 and want to share with you 5 tips (in no specific order) that you should consider when hiring your wedding photographer. 

STYLE

Photography is a form of art – just like every painter has their own special signature, no photographer is the same and we all have our own unique style. It’s important to find a photographer whose style aligns with your vision for your wedding photos, and whose work really resonates with you. Think about your personal style and vision and ask yourself the following:

• Do you prefer classic and timeless photos, or more creative and artistic shots? 
• Do you like photographs that look posed, or ones that tell more of a story? 
• Do you prefer the look of natural light? Or do you prefer the look of flash photography instead? 
• Do you prefer light and airy photos, dark and moody, or something in between? 
• Do you want clean, crisp photos, or do you like a more filmy vibe? 

Look at a few photographer’s portfolios to get a sense of their style and make sure their style resonates with you.

EXPERIENCE

Weddings can be unpredictable, and it’s important to hire a photographer who has extensive experience in capturing weddings. Wedding days are busy and chaotic and can be a lot of pressure for everyone involved. You want someone there that you can trust to know what they’re doing. 

Experienced wedding photographers have invested a lot of time in honing their skills and experience needed to capture the key moments of your day, from different lighting situations, to knowing what to do if rains, to managing large groups of people for photos.

PERSONALITY

Do you have to be besties with your photographer to get beautiful photos? No, of course not – but making sure you get along with your photographer can ensure that you have a positive photography experience that you will remember fondly. 

Your photographer will be with you more than any other person on your wedding day, even more than the two of you, so it’s important to hire someone whose personality you click with. A photographer who makes you feel comfortable and at ease will be able to capture more natural and candid moments. 

A good way to know if you feel comfortable with your photographer is to meet them before you book with them. 

I would recommend scheduling a video call or meeting them in person over coffee. You can also book them for an engagement shoot before booking them for your wedding so you know what kind of experience you’re going to get. 

INVESTMENT

Wedding photographers can vary in price, and different photographers might offer different things in their collections. Some photographers may only offer digital images, while others might offer the option for engagement sessions and wedding albums, wall art, and more.

It’s important to take into consideration what you want from your photography experience when looking over collections that photographers offer. 

Your wedding photos are a lifelong investment, and you’re going to be looking at these for the rest of the lives and passing them down to future generations. While it’s definitely important to find a photographer that aligns with your budget, it’s also important to prioritize quality over price so you’re getting photographs you love, because either way it will be an investment.
